Prior to Mississippi becoming a state in 1817, Alabama comprised the eastern portion of the Mississippi Territory. Alabama is bordered by the states of Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida to the south, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama has a coastline at the Gulf of Mexico which attracts much tourism to its beaches. Alabama’s economy is diverse and includes aerospace, education, health care, banking, automobile manufacturing, mineral extraction, steel production and fabrication. Alabama is also known for its admiration of sports, including Talladega Superspeedway, and Alabama and Auburn college football.
